£68M IN SIX YEARS FOR INTERPRETERS

ABOVE: Home secretary Alan Johnson has released he amount spent on translation and interpretation
12th March 2010

THE Home Office has spent nearly £68million on translators and interpreters in the past six years.

But annual spending has dropped from a peak of £14.9m in 2004-5 to £9.5m in 2008-9.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson said £67,906,000 had been spent on translation and interpretation services in the Home Office itself, the UK Border Agency, Identity and Passport Service and Criminal Records Bureau between 2003-4 and 2008-9. But the total figure could be higher because the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) and the Office of Criminal Justice and Reform (OCJR) were not included in the data from 2004-5 onwards.

Mr Johnson released the figures in a written parliamentary reply to his Tory counterpart, Chris Grayling.
