VILLAREAL BRING SPURS PAIN AS JERMAINE JENAS KO'D

ABOVE: Giuseppe Rossi's hat-trick and Jermaine Jenas's injury problems ensured Spurs' defeat
30th July 2010

Spurs 1 - Villareal 4

JERMAINE JENAS'S injury nightmare continued on the night Tottenham were given a real Champions League lesson by Villarreal.

Jenas limped off in the first half and went straight down the tunnel on his first appearance at White Hart Lane since January. The midfielder suffered groin problems last season and missed the final three months of the season after an op.

He has been tipped to leave Spurs this summer but aggravating the injury could put any move in major doubt.

Spurs struggled after his departure and were two goals behind by half-time against a team only in the Europa League after Real Mallorca were kicked out for financial problems.

Harry Redknapp will demand improvement from his side if they are going to win their qualifier and reach the group stages of the Champions League.

Former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi got both of the first-half goals in the pre-season friendly.

The first was a crisp finish into the far corner when Santi Cazorla slipped the ball through Alan Hutton’s legs to set him up. His second came from the same position when Marcos Senna played the ball forward and Michael Dawson missed his clearance.

Redknapp made seven changes at the break and saw real improvement after the interval. Giovani dos Santos pulled one back in the 57th minute when Senna lost the ball and Peter Crouch set up his team-mate.

But Rossi completed his hat-trick with a 25-yard shot that went in via a deflection off Vedran Corluka. And Spurs fell even further behind four minutes from the end as the Spanish side cut them open again.

Borja Valero did all the damage out wide before crossing to Marco Ruben, who tapped in from close range.
